Sha-na-na-na-na....

Sha-na-na-na-na...for all you Caddyshack fans...that movie pretty much provided David's basic knowledge of golf for a very long time. However, he has really gotten into the game this last year, including spending ridiculous amounts of money on golf equipment, paraphernalia and fashion. Why is it that you must spend $60 on shoes with spikes? Oh, ok - it will let you grip the grass better so that you can improve your golf game by 1 point...whatever!!! Well, he enjoys it, and I'm glad he has found another hobby. It's supposedly a form of exercise, but I do believe you negate any amount of calories burned when you consume multiple beers throughout the course of 18 holes. Another plus is that David has reconnected with one of his best friends from high school, Michael. Now on the weekends that I work, Michael, his brother and David like to spend time together golfing.

Symphony At The Park

One of the things my family loves to do every summer is go downtown to the Symphony At The Park. On warm Sunday evenings, Austinites gather on the lawn of the Long Center to listen to the Austin Symphony. Sometimes they play classical music, but this night was my favorite - Big Band music. We bring food and wine, and just enjoy the music, the sunset and the Austin skyline.

Gettin' Crafty

I wanted to make Colin and Jenn something for their new house, so I found a black frame with a mat, added some scrapbook paper and scrapbook embellishments and a black and white photo of them. I thought it turned out cute! Congratulations on your new house guys!

Puppy-licious

Our dogs are so stinkin' spoiled that they DEMAND to eat straight out of the Beneful bag whenever we bring it home from the store. Seriously, they whine and jump and try to scratch and bite the bag. (And, yes Purina, they are available for commercial work!) So, before we pour it into our storage container, we open it up, spill a little out onto the floor and let them feast.

Happy 35th Birthday, David!

Somehow the 18-year old guy I fell in love with has grown....ahem...old. I mean, of course, older. It's not like I've aged a bit, right!?!? David turned 35 years old this week! His parents took us out for an amazing dinner at David's favorite restaurant, Trulucks. He used his birthday money to buy some new golf clubs and golf shirts. Last night, we had "Game Night" at our house where my siblings and I presented him with our gift...a classic piece of art we had commissioned just for David (by an artist that my sister found through the museum she works for). What kind of art are we talking about? No, not a beautiful oil painting or a watercolor, not a sculpture or photograph. Come on, it had to be something that would fit David perfectly. It was Spiderman glitter art! OK - it sounds a little crazy, but it was really cool! The man who made this is clearly very talented! It was the perfect gift for a 35-year old little boy man! Than it was time for games! Please enjoy the photos of the white board I spent $35 on at Office Max. I just knew it would be well worth the money, and I think we used it for all of 10 minutes before the natives were restless and decided they didn't want to play Pictionary anymore.

I told David that just because he turned 35 didn't mean he had to actually dress like an old man, but somehow he thinks black socks with shorts is ok. I do not let him out of the house like this!

My $35 white board...David said the 80's called and they want their dot-lettering back. Whatever! I LOVE my rainbow of dry-erase markers!

Jenn and Colin got David this "5th Birthday" card and changed it up for David, but they couldn't put 35 candles on the cake, I guess!

This is David's reaction to his Spidey glitter art!

And here he is imitating how Spiderman shoots his web!

This is my dad's "Oh, did I just cheat?" face.

Jenn and our friend Michelle (once again, my $35 white board - sorry, just can't let it go).

Summer Farmer's Market

Our little town started having a Farmer's Market last year, and it came back last week! It's hotter than the 7th circle of you-know-what, but the pickin's are totally worth the risk of dehydration and heat stroke. Here's the loot from this week!

The most fun part about going on Tuesdays is a little game I like to call, "Farmer's Market Surprise." I never know what is going to be for dinner on Tuesdays until I get to the market and feel inspired! On this night we had sauteed squash with Parmesan as a side dish, but the real winner was dessert: I sauteed my little basket O' figs with butter, brown sugar and a little cinnamon, then poured it over vanilla frozen yogurt. Oh my gosh, it was heaven!

4th of July

My brother, Colin, and his wife, Jenn, recently moved into their first home. So, we had 4th of July at their new house! We totally missed all the fireworks this year, but ended the night with some poker. Ahhhh, gambling...how very American of us!

Happy Pre-1st Birthday, Elijah!

David's cousin, Daniel and his wife, Caanon, along with their baby, Elijah, will be leaving soon to live in Asia for 3 years. We're excited for them, but we're going to miss them so much! We spent some time with them this week, and love being around little Elijah! Over Easter, David had turned some wood into little Easter Egg shapes. Daniel and Caanon said that Elijah has decided these are his new favorite toys! He loves to move them from the wooden bowl that David made to another basket.

Last night we got together for an early 1st Birthday for Elijah, since they will be overseas on his real birthday in August. It was fun!

David and I gave Elijah his first little basketball, in honor of his daddy's years on the court!

David also introduced Elijah to his first golfball...our coffee table almost didn't survive it! You know how 1-year olds love to bang on things!

The proud grandparents!

Freedom Journey

In December of 2006, just 2 years after Byron died in Iraq, we decided to take a "Freedom Journey." We spent 3weeks on a road trip through the eastern US - from Austin east to Savannah, then all the way north to New England, and back a little inland to Texas. We traveled over 6000 miles in an effort to see our beautiful country and understand what Byron sacrificed his life for. We drove scenic routes, through small towns and big cities, stopping at places that held history in shaping our nation. We stopped at Veteran's Memorials, National Cemeteries, historical monuments and some of the most beautiful places in America. In each place, we left a "Freedom Rock," a smooth stone that had Byron's name and KIA date on one side, and said "Freedom Isn't Free" on the other. It was our way of taking Byron with us and leaving a bit of him in each special place. This experience was so healing for us, and truly one of the most memorable and special events of our entire lives. Here are our favorite pictures from the Freedom Journey.
